Update on Brown Bins

Many of you have asked me when the brown bin service will be available for the whole Portobello area.  I have been in contact with the Council to request an explanation for the delay and to encourage them to expedite the rollout of this service in the South East Inner City Area.

Initially, it was anticipated that the rollout of the service would be completed by the end of 2008, but Dublin City Council say it is now likely to be the Summer of 2009 before the roll out is completed.  Dublin City Council will only issue brown bins where the whole collection route comprised wheeled bins only, as it is not practical to issue brown bins where a mix of collection methods (bags / bins) is in operation.  This is because bagged areas have a continuing need for a weekly collection.

Dublin City Council is currently reviewing all areas where mixed routes are in operation and it is to be completed in the near future. Upon completion all customers who are in receipt of a wheeled bin collection service will be provided with a brown bin. A specific date of when this will take place is currently unavailable but it is likely to be towards the end of May 2009.

The rollout of a brown bin service is an essential element of waste reduction and one that I intend to push once in Council.
